* We do not offer benefits.  The fringe rate is benefit money for health insurance and retirement. It is placed into an approved plan for each employee. Employees receive fringe money by the end of each season or on a week with less than 40 hours.

Job Summary

JRK Enterprises is a Sub-Contractor that supplies flaggers to Prime Contractors. The position requires a variety of duties to maintain traffic control at various construction sites. Because flaggers are responsible for public and crew safety and make the greatest number of contacts with the public, they will be trained in safe traffic control practices and public contact techniques. JRK Enterprises is a drug free workplace.

Essential Job Functions

A flag person must fulfill the following job functions:

  • · Communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly & courteously & the ability to follow the same.
  • · Recognize dangerous traffic situations & warn fellow workers in sufficient time to avoid injury.
  • · Move & maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles.
  • · Control signaling devices (such as stop/slow paddle & a red flag) and use a 22 channel radio in order to provide clear & positive guidance to drivers approaching a temporary traffic control zone in frequently changing situations.
  • · Complete a full work shift of physical labor while standing for extended periods of time in sometimes extreme weather with limited breaks.

  • · Meet work schedules. (No set starting or quitting time)
  • · Fill out a daily timecard for JRK Enterprises and mail to JRK at the end of week.

Job Skills and Required Training

In order to be considered for employment, a flag person must:

  • · Successfully complete traffic control training & display the ability to operate flagging equipment used for traffic control per Penn DOT requirements.
  • · Be knowledgeable of and understand Penn DOT regulations for traffic control and the responsibility to the public and the work crew for their safety.
  • · JRK will provide the training course (6 hours). Applicants are not paid to take flagging course. Employment is contingent upon passing the Penn DOT flagger course. Testing is at our office in Alexandria, Huntingdon County.

Typical Work Environment

The following points describe a typical working environment for a flag person.

  • · Extreme heat & cold temperatures.
  • · Rain, dusty conditions when milling the highway.
  • · Stressful
    • · Controlling intersections
    • · Communication with other flaggers
    • · Large # of flaggers working together on a project
    • · High traffic areas
  • · No sit down lunch breaks. The crew doesn’t stop working for lunch.
  • · Early start/Late quitting times.
  • · Rain outs, 1 hour show-up.
  • · Nightshift work and occasional weekend work if crew is behind schedule.
  • · Bathroom breaks are limited and not all jobs have facilities.
  • · No cell phones permitted while working.
  • · Drug Free Work environment, random testing throughout the season on the job site.

 

Additional Requirements

In additional to the above items, a flag person must also:

  • Have reliable transportation
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • · Must be able to transport yourself and equipment to whatever job location assigned to. (Up to 50 miles and could be more occasionally)
  • · Prime contractor gives breaks, therefore they may tell you to take their vehicle on break, must have valid driver’s license to do this.
  • Be available Monday-Saturday for work. Nightwork if required.
  • Comply with dress code of pants, shirt with sleeve, steel toed safety boots.
  • Wear hard hat, safety vest, safety boots at all times while on the job site.
  • Purchase a set of 22 channel radios and maintain with batteries throughout the season. Must purchase safety pants and glow wand for night work.
  • Pass all Testing
